History & Tourism

Raebareli’s history dates back to ancient times, with mythological and historical references linking it to the Bhars, a prominent tribal group. The town was originally known as Bharauli or Barauli, which evolved into ‘Bareli’ over time. The prefix ‘Rae’ is believed to be a derivative of ‘Rahi’, a nearby village located about 5 kilometers from the town.

The district gained administrative identity during the British era in 1858, and since then, it has been a significant center of political and cultural activity. Raebareli holds a special place in India’s political history, being a long-time parliamentary constituency of several prominent leaders, including former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
