Amethi, Uttar Pradesh – A unique identity of every district lies in its local specialties, and for Amethi, that identity is increasingly becoming Moonj Craft. This traditional form of handicraft is now creating employment opportunities, especially for women and the unemployed. With government support of up to 50% subsidy and free training, residents of Amethi are finding new hope in entrepreneurship.

Traditional Craft Gaining National Recognition
Originally rooted in Amethi, Moonj Craft has now reached state and national platforms. The craft involves making eco-friendly household and decorative items using Moonj and Kaas grass, available locally. Products such as chairs, mats, baskets, stools, thrones for deities, roti boxes, and dining table accessories are created with beautiful carvings, adding both durability and aesthetic value. These items are sold at prices ranging from ₹200 to ₹2500.

Quick Production and High Demand
Kanchan, a local craftswoman, shared that a single product takes about 4–5 days to complete, and there's consistent demand not only in local markets but also on online platforms. "These products are sturdy, visually appealing, and long-lasting," she says. Through Moonj Craft, she earns around ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 per month.

Another artisan shared her hands-on experience – from collecting Moonj and Kaas grass from riverbanks to cleaning, carving, and molding the grass into beautiful crafts. The work has brought her financial stability and independence.

Government Support for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
The business potential of Moonj Craft is growing rapidly. For those interested in starting on a larger scale, the government offers 50% financial assistance. Additionally, regular free training programs are organized by the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and the District Industries Centre, empowering individuals with the skills needed to launch their own businesses.

Moonj Craft is not only preserving traditional art but also opening doors to self-reliance and economic growth for the people of Amethi. It’s an inspiring example of how heritage and innovation can come together to create sustainable livelihoods.
