Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh – A Milestone in Indian Railway Manufacturing
The production of Vande Bharat train coaches has officially commenced at Rae Bareli’s prestigious Modern Rail Coach Factory (MRCF), marking a significant achievement for Indian Railways. After months of preparation and planning, work is progressing rapidly, with the first set of 20 coaches expected to be ready by the end of August.
To ensure precision and high standards, a team of senior officials from MRCF was sent to the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai to gather essential insights into Vande Bharat’s design, construction protocols, and safety measures. This initiative highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to maintaining excellence and technical superiority.
Rae Bareli’s Modern Coach Factory, already renowned for manufacturing world-class coaches like Antyodaya, Tejas, and Deen Dayalu, has also supplied coaches to countries like Mozambique, showcasing its global capabilities. Known for producing both Broad Gauge and Cape Gauge coaches, the facility has now taken up the ambitious target of building Vande Bharat coaches—India’s premium high-speed train.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during his visit to MRCF, sanctioned a substantial fund of ₹150 crore to support this project. A dedicated testing shed is also under construction to carry out electrical trials once the coaches are ready.
The Design and Quality Control Department is closely monitoring each phase of production to ensure adherence to international standards. The prototype shell of Vande Bharat had already been developed earlier, and now the focus has shifted to full-scale furnishing and electrical integration. The first coach has reached the furnishing stage where electrical wiring, window installations, flooring, and seating are being completed. Final finishing work will follow soon.
MRCF General Manager Prashant Mishra confirmed that the first rake of 20 coaches is expected to roll out by July or August 2025. “This marks a proud moment for us. We are on track to become the first unit in North and Northeast India to manufacture Vande Bharat trains. It is a major milestone in our journey,” he added.
With this development, Rae Bareli is poised to play a crucial role in redefining India’s railway landscape and strengthening the country’s position on the global rail map.
